SusteIT Briefing Papers
The papers are outputs from SsuteIT's JISC-funded projects on greening scientific computing and videoconferencing. Note there is also a series of short SusteIT case studies which feature initiatives from individual universities.
1. JISC and Greening ICT in Universities and Colleges (v1, Oct 2011) - describing the work of JISC and its Greening IT programme.
2. Interest-free Funding for Energy Efficient IT (v2, Aug 2011) - describes the Revolving Green Fund (RGF) which provides funding to English Universities (similar schemes operate in Scotland and Northern Ireland) for energy efficient technologies, including IT.
3. ENERGY STAR® for ICT Equipment (v1, Feb, 2011) - summarises the Energy Star labelling scheme for products which use less than a specified energy consumption in typical use.
4. Green ICT Product Labelling Scheme (v1, Feb 2011) - describes UK-relevant labelling schemes which cover the environmental impacts of ICT products.
5. Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) In Data Centres (v1, March 2011) - explains what PUE is, discusses its benefits and limitations, and gives examples of data centres with low PUE values.
6. Energy and Environmental Requirements for ICT (v1, June 2011) - a summary of a longer report on the various legislation and voluntary schemes regulating/assessing the energy and environmental impacts of ICT.
7. Energy and Environmental Life Cycle Impacts of ICT (v1, June 2011) - a summary of a longer paper reviewing the life cycle environmental impacts of ICT equipment.
8. Buying Studio Videoconferencing Equipment (v1, Aug 2011) - a SusteIT/Welsh Video Network guide on specifying and procuring studio VC equipment. It covers topics such as requirements; costs; space; networks and connections; standards; trialing; environment; quotations and maintenance.
9. Minimising Energy Use by Displays and Reports (v1, Aug 2011) - summarises the presentations from an Oxford workshop on the use of energy displays for behavioural change.
10. Powering Down Personal Computers (v1, Aug 2011) - summarises the various free and proprietary solutions used by universities for powering down personal computers.
11. Embedding Videonferencing in Institutions (v1, Aug 2011) - provides general advice on how to improve uptake, with a case study of senior management use at Trinity St David.
12. Metering and Monitoring Energy use in Data Centres (v1, Sep 2011) - a RECSO/SusteIT briefing which summarises the content of a workshop on the topic.
13. Access Grid Supports Science Research and Teaching (v1, Oct 2011) - describes examples of science research and teaching programmes using Access Grid, a research and teaching focused conferencing technology.
