UK Case Studies (download from bottom of page)

As part of the S-Lab project HEEPI are producing a series of short (2pp) case studies on best practice in university lab design, management and teaching. We will be adding new case studies throughout 2011.

Note there are separate short lab briefing papers covering specific lab issues.

1. Queen's University of Belfast - Flexibility and User Involvement at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology

2. Better Chemical Management - Environmental, Financial and Research Benefits at the University of Edinburgh

3. Laboratory Energy Management - Minimising use through a specialist manager at the University of York

4. Improved Sample Tracking - Energy and Research Benefits at the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, Queen Mary, University of London

5. Energy Efficient Cold Storage - Replacing Freezers in the University of Newcastle's Laboratories

6. Fume Cupboard Energy Awareness - Minimising Consumption by Monitoring Use at the University of Nottingham

7. Energy Efficient Chemistry - Devolved Energy Budgeting and Building Management at the University of Oxford

8. Incentives for Energy Reduction -  Sharing Savings or Cost Increases at the University of Cambridge

9. University of Newcastle - the Baddiley-Clark Building is BREEAM Excellent Without Extra Cost

10. Sustainable Laboratories in California Universities - including a lab sustainability program at University California Santa Barbara and optimising sample storage at Stanford University

11. Greening Chemistry at the University of Bradford - taught chemistry modules have been reviewed and modified to incorporate sustainability and green chemistry principles

12. Continuous Commissioning of Imperial College Laboratories.  Periodic testing and adjustment of building systems at Imperial has improved lab efficiency and effectiveness.

13. AstraZeneca Macclesfield - new facility improves performance - desribes a new award-winning research facility at AZE which brings groups of researchers together from different sites.

14. Sustainable Laboratory Practices at the University of Manchester - provides a number of examples of sustainable lab practices at the university.  See also a Briefing Paper on Strategic Approaches to Sustainable Labs which describes the sustainable lab group set up at Manchester.

An article in the July issue of Cleanroom Technology, Cupboard love gets green overtones,  reproduced with permission below, features S-Lab cases 3 (York), 6 (Nottingham) and 7 (Oxford).
