What\'s Best Practice?

Much of our work involves highlighting and disseminating best practice through events, benchmarking, case studies and other means. The HEEPI legacy site has many examples of these.

On benchmarking, see our recent reports on benchmarking laboratories and residences, and the results from our 2002-4 benchmarking round, plus details of our other benchmarking activities. We are also working on a new Laboratory Energy Auditing and Footprinting initiative, which will develop an Excel tool from pilot work at the Universities of Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester.

The SusteIT review of sustainable IT in further and higher education also produced 25 best practice case studies, as well as other materials.

The management of these was transferred into the capable hands of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges in 2008 but we remain involved by HEEPI Co-Director Peter James chairing the Awards Steering Group. Details of past Green Gowns winning and commended entries are available on the HEEPI legacy site, and include  brochures on the 2007-82006-7, and 2005-6 Awards, a Green Gowns article in a special Estates supplement of the Times Higher for the 2006-7 Awards. and a summary article in a special Times Higher Supplement on Sustainability on the 2005-6 Awards. The HEEPI site also has individual case studies of the 55 winning and commended entries to date, and other publications on Green Gowns, including the Brochure and a
